Validation workshop for the assessment on DRE for powering the agriculture sector in Malawi

IRENA is pleased to share that there will be a Validation Workshop happening from July 23rd to July 26th, 2024 in Lilongwe, Malawi. This workshop signifies a step, in our collaboration with the Malawi government to assess and encourage the use of renewable energy in the agriculture and food industry supporting the country’s transition, to more sustainable energy options.

IRENA has worked closely with partners, in Malawi to carry out the assessment aimed at improving ways to integrate energy into agrifood value chains. This initiative is in line with IRENAs commitment to promoting energy transitions as part of the Lives and Livelihoods Initiative launched at COP28, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience and adaptation in vulnerable communities by transforming agri-food and health value chains with renewable energy.

The upcoming event will unite government representatives, professionals from industries, business owners, financial institutions, farmers, cooperatives and members of international development organizations. The aim is to confirm the results of the assessment, receive input, from stakeholders and discuss creating and funding a project to introduce energy solutions in Melawi’s agriculture and food sector.

The workshop will focus on the following topics:

  • Assessment Findings: Exploring the potential of renewable energy in specific agri-food value chains;
  • Funding and Execution Approaches: Strategies for funding and executing energy initiatives, within the food sectors;
  • Forging Alliances: Forming partnerships to promote enduring growth and progress.

This workshop marks a milestone in ensuring that Malawi’s agricultural sector can utilize energy technologies to boost productivity, improve resilience to climate change and support the country’s broader energy transition objectives.= We eagerly anticipate the collaborative efforts and insightful feedback that will emerge from this important event.

Together, we can drive the energy transition in Malawi’s agri-food sector!
