Tripling Renewable Power Globally by 2030: NDC support to realise countries’ renewable energy and sustainable development ambitions

The global community has recognized the urgency of accelerating the transition to renewable energy, a critical pathway to mitigating climate change while simultaneously addressing energy poverty and fostering economic growth. The COP28 Global Pledge of Renewables and Energy Efficiency, endorsed by 132 countries and the EU, sets an ambitious target of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Developing countries have demonstrated a strong commitment to embracing renewable energy as a key driver of sustainable development. The upcoming 2025 deadline for enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) presents a crucial opportunity for all nations to outline ambitious plans that leverage the transformative potential of renewable energy to achieve their climate and development goals. With extensive experience in providing technical assistance, policy guidance, and capacity building to over 96 Parties to the Paris Agreement, IRENA and its partners are uniquely positioned to support countries in navigating the complexities and unlocking the full potential of renewable energy for a sustainable and equitable future.

Held on 6 June 2024, 17-18.30 CEST, the event will foster a rich and inclusive dialogue on the challenges and opportunities associated with accelerating renewable energy deployment in developing countries. It seeks to highlight existing support for preparing NDCs 3.0 with the highest possible ambition in line with the tripling renewables pledge, and also serves as an opportunity for further expanding and aligning NDC 3.0 support towards 2025. The outcome of the event will inform the further development of international cooperation on NDCs 3.0 preparation and the following implementation, as well to hear from the member countries on the need for IRENA’s engagement and support needed in their preparation.
