Validation workshop on powering agri-food with renewable energy

IRENA is pleased to announce that a Validation Workshop took place on 26-27th of June 2024 in Harare, Zimbabwe. The workshop was a significant step in our partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe to evaluate and promote the adoption of renewable energy within the agriculture and food sector contributing to the nations shift towards sustainable energy solutions.

IRENA has collaborated extensively with stakeholders in Zimbabwe to carry out a thorough assessment focused on enhancing opportunities for incorporating renewable energy into agrifood value chains. This effort is aligned with IRENA’s overarching dedication to advancing energy transitions through the Empowering Lives and Livelihoods Initiative launched at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The workshop brought together government officials, experts from industries, entrepreneurs, financial services providers, farmers and delegates from international organisations. The goal was to validate the findings of the assessment, gather valuable feedback from stakeholders, and discuss the development and resourcing of a programme(s) to implement renewable energy solutions in Zimbabwe’s agri-food sector.

The workshop focused on topics including:

  • Assessment findings on the potential of renewable energy in specific agri-food value chains;
  • Strategies for financing and implementing renewable energy programmes in the agri-food sector;
  • Building partnerships for sustainable development.

This workshop represents a crucial step in ensuring that Zimbabwe's agricultural sector can leverage renewable energy technologies to enhance productivity, increase resilience to climate change, and contribute to the country’s overall energy transition goals.
