IRENA contributes to SD-Learning event at Rio+20

While at Rio+20 the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) contributed to the SD-Learning, a capacity-building event involving practical knowledge and hands-on training from experts around the world.

The IRENA session focused on policy-making for renewable energy deployment. Renewable energy technology costs are decreasing. However, the key driver for advancing renewables remains forward-thinking policy decisions at the local, state and national levels. Market forces alone are not able, at present, to scale up the use of renewables or deliver the sustainable energy services required to meet the world’s energy needs.

IRENA experts addressed the role of policies in creating an enabling environment for renewable energy investment, and presented the Agency’s latest products. Their presentation was followed by a lively discussion on various issues, such as policy-making at the regional and at the community levels.
